OUR LOVE STORY

How we met

It all started in August 2021, when our mutual friend, Rucard Pienaar, invited us to a beer tasting and to watch the SA vs. Argentina rugby game (SA won 32–12!). We technically met at the tasting, but sparks really flew later that evening at a friend’s flat, where we ended up sitting side by side.

Let’s just say Owen didn’t make the smoothest first impression, he greeted everyone except Elze! (She’s convinced he was just too intimidated). As for who made the first move? Owen swears it was Elze. Elze says it was mutual. What we do agree on is that the night started with Owen critiquing Elze’s parallel parking… and ended with a kiss on the dance floor.

Fast forward to

By October 2021, we were officially a couple. Just two months later, we took a leap of faith and booked a Contiki trip to Croatia for June 2022. Easily one of the best decisions we’ve made.

Since then, we’ve shared incredible adventures: weekends on the farm, road-tripping through Cape Town, Leopard Creek, golfing in Thailand and Vietnam, December holidays in Mozambique, and a white Christmas in France. Through it all, there have been belly laughs, unforgettable memories, and a love that just keeps growing.

We’ve been each other’s rock! Owen supported Elze through her Master’s degree, and Elze stood by Owen through life’s ups and downs. We both dreamed of a partner who would say yes to life’s crazy ideas and epic adventures, and in each other, we found exactly that.

The proposal

In March 2024, while Elze was in the Netherlands for work, Owen secretly set the stage. After asking both families for their blessings, he teamed up with his brother, Lieben, to suggest a “casual” weekend in Paris.

Elze was hoping that Owen would surprise her in Paris, but she never imagined just how magical it would be.

Across from the Eiffel Tower, by the Seine River, she spotted Owen waiting. Walking toward him, heels clicking over cobblestones, she noticed a photographer nearby… and that’s when she knew. Speechless, in shock, and full of joy, she said YES. (Easiest decision ever!!)

We spent the weekend celebrating in Paris, exploring the city, and sharing the news with loved ones over countless excited video calls. It was the perfect start to this next, beautiful chapter of our lives and we can’t wait to celebrate the next part with you!
